Situated between two water bodies, the Adriatic and the channel up-north, the sedimentary strip of land is a horizontal palimpsest of the landscape agents. This stratification of geological and hydrological aspects, from sedimentation, land salinity and coastal winds, have indicated specific vegetation and land-use patterns. The adaptation of this landscape system is the initial design approach, bringing the two strips of stands parallel to the natural layers. The decision attempts to frame the football pitch in-between two linear volumes, while maintaining the landscape rhythm. The simple shape of the building provides the possibility of continuous and interesting linear spaces. This simplicity also relates to the building material, construction technology and formal gestures. Four ramps are nestled on two parallel walls to support the vertical forces while the railing and slab form a monolithic U shape beam, dealing with bending moments and temporary heavy loads. Materiality refers to simple choices based on the local technology or vernacular architecture. That is the case of the woven straw cover of the roof, the white mid size granulation plaster, polished concrete and stone tiles from local sources. This Mediterranean inspiration makes the sea side Stadium a decent cultural gesture between knowledge from history and a sustainable future.
